Oklahoma

State EMS office Oklahoma State Department of Health, Emergency Systems, EMS Division
Licensure levels recognized EMR, EMT, Intermediate or Advanced EMT, and Paramedic.
NREMT required for initial licensure Personnel licensed after 1 April 2010 maintain National Registry certification. Someone licensed before that date who has held their Oklahoma license continuously since may renew without it.
Reciprocity / legal recognition The Department compares the source state's scope of practice against Oklahoma's and issues the license or certification that most closely matches.
Renewal cycle Two years after the first license period. A 30-day grace period follows expiry, and no renewal license can be issued more than 90 days after the expiry date.
Continuing education model Since 11 September 2022 no refresher course is required. Documentation shows continuing education meeting or exceeding the National Continued Competency Program; 72 hours recertifies an AEMT or Paramedic.

Certification and licensure are not the same thing

National Registry certification

Passing the NREMT cognitive and psychomotor exams earns you national certification. It is what most states use as the entry standard, but it is not a license to practice on its own.

State license

Your state EMS office issues the credential that actually lets you work. Each state sets its own application process, background requirements, fees, and scope of practice.

Reciprocity

Moving states usually means applying for legal recognition of your existing certification rather than starting over. What transfers automatically varies, and this is where candidates most often get stuck.
