Indiana

State EMS office Indiana Department of Homeland Security, EMS Certification (Indiana EMS Commission)
Licensure levels recognized EMR, EMT, Advanced EMT and Paramedic.
NREMT required for initial licensure The National Registry cognitive exam is the state exam for EMT; AEMT and Paramedic take both National Registry exams, and National Registry certification is required at those levels.
Reciprocity / legal recognition An applicant submits a copy of their current National Registry or state EMS certification with the reciprocity application; the process starts once every required document is in.
Renewal cycle Two years.
Continuing education model Forty hours over two years, of which at least 34 are lectures, critiques, skills examinations, courses or teaching sessions covering the Indiana curriculum, plus at least six hours of audit and review.

Certification and licensure are not the same thing

National Registry certification

Passing the NREMT cognitive and psychomotor exams earns you national certification. It is what most states use as the entry standard, but it is not a license to practice on its own.

State license

Your state EMS office issues the credential that actually lets you work. Each state sets its own application process, background requirements, fees, and scope of practice.

Reciprocity

Moving states usually means applying for legal recognition of your existing certification rather than starting over. What transfers automatically varies, and this is where candidates most often get stuck.
