State EMS office Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services
Licensure levels recognized EMR, EMT, AEMT and Paramedic.
NREMT required for initial licensure Yes. Every level requires proof of current National Registry certification at the matching level.
Reciprocity / legal recognition A clinician certified in another state or by the National Registry may be eligible for reciprocity on proof of current National Registry certification, or a current unrestricted certification from another state, at the level applied for. The same route covers service members and veterans who transitioned within the past six years.
Renewal cycle Two years. Sexual violence awareness training is taken once in every two-year cycle alongside the continuing education.
Continuing education model National component hours follow the National Registry: 8 for an EMR, 20 for an EMT, 25 for an AEMT and 30 for a Paramedic. From 1 January 2026 only the 2025 NCCP model is accepted, and hours must fall inside the current renewal cycle.

Certification and licensure are not the same thing

National Registry certification

Passing the NREMT cognitive and psychomotor exams earns you national certification. It is what most states use as the entry standard, but it is not a license to practice on its own.

State license

Your state EMS office issues the credential that actually lets you work. Each state sets its own application process, background requirements, fees, and scope of practice.

Reciprocity

Moving states usually means applying for legal recognition of your existing certification rather than starting over. What transfers automatically varies, and this is where candidates most often get stuck.
